The Magic Of 'Home Is Where The Heart Is'

or David Cassidy on Spotify.

Let's start with the first song from this outstanding album released in 1976. We are so lucky that David Cassidy with Steve Ross were in Paris in March 1976, and they appeared on two French TV programes. On March 28 they were together on 'Systeme deux'.

Thanks to my 6 year-old grandson, I've recently rediscovered Spotify again. I had a Spotify account some years ago, but I rarely used it, but my grandson has introduced me to an amazing nature podcast for kids and we enjoy listening to it together. And last week I had a short holiday, and during it I was walking a lot and listening to David Cassidy on Spotify.

Another stroke of luck..

Not all of David's solo albums are on Spotify, but all recorded for Bell Records and for RCA. And it's happened that I've never listened to songs of  'Home Is Where The Heart Is' in the order David placed them on the album. He co-produced it with Bruce Johnston, but this album is so his own, the most personal, a great concept album about love.

Bill House, a known session musician, singer and songwriter, who co-wrote with DC some songs for this album, "It's better than the 'Higher They Climb, The Harder They Fall' because we had the same rhythm section and David was more in control of what he was trying to do. It's so rare that you get a band together that really wants to play with each other. It was a great band and we had so much fun making the record. (...) We were tuned into each other as writers. We wrote most of the stuff on the piano. David's a great guitar player. He was every bit as good as I was." (David Cassidy: Could It Be Forever?, 2007, p.324-325)

Record Mirror, March 26, 1976. "Cassidy's Home Run. Of the 10 tracks David has written or co-written 7. (...) The whole album abounds with confidence and David's singing in particular has improved immeasurably since his last album. The highlights, 'On Fire', 'January' which I prefer to Pilot's version, 'Tomorrow' on which he BEATS McCartney. 'I'm Breaking Down Again which has a great hook and 'Bedtime' which is a dream of a song to sing of any album. Ever since David resigned from being king of the teenies, he's been looking for respect for his music. With this album, in my book, he got it!"

Is 'Home Is Where The Heart Is' the best David Cassidy's album? Certainly magical, David's voice..the lyrics of those songs, David Cassidy telling us the story of his love, of his heartbreak. It's so emotional listening to it, it's so personal but at the same time so universal, we all experience such emotions. He was an outstanding singer. Yes, probably this is the best of his solo albums.

And  I've found on Spotify a phone interview with David, from 2002, and a lot of questions were about his homes. When asked about his home in the 60s, he answered, 'My home was my suitcase.'. Finding this interview was a great surprise for me, I've never listened to it before.
