Breaking Up Is Hard To Do / Neil Sedaka, Howard Greenfield.

I've written about this song a few times, but yesterday while tidying my records, DVD and vinyls, I started first watching, ('Keith and Lauriebelle', Season 4, Episode 19), and later listening to my singles collection.

I don't have many singles, but they are so precious, all of them bought at Swindon's charity shops. In the 70s, David's albums and singles, solo or with Partridge Family, sold millions of copies in the UK, so it's nothing unusual to find them in local charity shops.

I have in my collection Partridge Family maxi single released in 1972, 'Breaking Up Is Hard To Do/ I Think I Love You/ I'll Meet You Halfway'. It hit No. 3 on the UK chart on July 15, 1972. And stayed on the charts for 13 weeks.

David Cassidy as Keith Partridge singing 'Breaking Up Is Hard To Do', in the music scene on Episode 12 from Season 3. It was first aired on December 8, 1972.

Impressive number of more than 2 million views and hundreds of comments. This music scene contains everything we still love the series for. Remainds us of those carefree, happy days of our childhood, makes us smile. And in the middle of this David Cassidy, of course he was the most important. He must have been very happy filming this episode. A lot of beautiful girls. And horses. You just can't take your eyes off him...So beautiful and shining.

'Breaking Up Is Hard To Do' was the No. 1 hit for Neil Sedaka in 1962. It's a kind of a song everybody knows and it looks very easy to sing. And yet David Cassidy was able to add something of his own to it, something so special, and what's more 3 times. That first cover, from 1972 was so happy and optimistic,  he was sure that the girl would be back. Who could have left him..

He performed that song again in May 1974, in London. This time it was a rock ballad, rather not for little girls. Passion and desire..and pain..'Don't take your love away from me..'

He returned to 'Breaking Up Is Hard To Do' once more, 30 years later, in 2003. One of the saddest David Cassidy's songs. We can hear his sorrow and regret, this time it was his fault she'd gone, and it would be no good ending..

Wonderful video made by Anna Maria Ottengren. Yes, we all miss him.

If anyone has any doubts about what a great singer David Cassidy was, just let him listen to those 3 versions of 'Breaking Up Is Hard To Do', made in the three phases of his life.

And one more version. Made by David's fan, Sandie Leeming. Breaking up is really so very hard to do..
