'Don't Be Sad For Me..'

It was a pure accident that while driving yesterday, I was listening to EFX soundtrack. I have a CD with it, and rather an old car, with a CD player. And the song from EFX, 'Tonight', literally stopped me in my tracks. Sure, I've heard  'Tonight' a few times, but never very carefully listened to it, and yesterday the lyrics of that song and first of all David's voice..amazing. He was truly one in a kind performer.

Just wonderful. How he did it, that every song he performed seems to be about him. Or even more, about him and a listener.  And I even don't know who wrote this particular song which comes from the original version of the show. Or truly speaking I don't know who was singing with David. Somehow it's not important.

Of course David Cassidy wasn't the only one who combined his career as an actor, singer, or even a teen idol, with successes in musical theater or Las Vegas. Donny Osmond, David Essex and others come to mind. And in David's case there were critics who already in the early 70s, pointed out the theatrical style of his singing, and that he could make a great career in Las Vegas.

This one was written by David himself for EFX. Another great Sharon Angulot's video.

He could make every song his own, add something personal, and only the greatest artists can do it. And that there is that David's perfectionism, how it is all refined, thought out, every phrase, note, word. David seems to sing effortlessly, and of course he was very talented, but there was also a lot of hard work. Jack taught him that, work ethic. Practicing for hours if necessary until everything is at the highest possible level.

Once more 'Tonight', only audio. Just put on your headphones and listen. Amazing, so moving experience..

And btw. exactly 28 years ago, in September 1996, David Cassidy with his brother Shaun, and his friend Don Reo, was working non stop rewriting EFX..
