35 000 Love Letters

Let's start with the song from the B side of David Cassidy's single released in February 1985. The Letter.

Difficult to believe that someone didn't want him. Of course it's just a song, co-written by DC, but we know that he really got such letters in his life.

I like this song very much. It's a very typical kind of dance, electronic song, so popular in the 80s, but it's also a kind of a rocker number,  and it's amazing how it suited David's strong voice, he really could sing everything, and The Letter is so enyojable to listen to or to dance.

I think he could have recorded really outstanding the 80s album, if his producer had been someone else. Let's face it, Alan Tarney was first of all Cliff Richard's producer, and the songs on 'Romance' album were mostly re-written Cliff's numbers.

Recently Jane has posted on the website (thanks to Lanie Bray), a lot of articles from German magazine, 'Bravo'. I've written about 'Bravo' a few times, about the importance of this magazine in Europe in the 70s. That was our Jackie and Tiger Beat rolled into one glossy and exciting mag, very known also on the other side of The Iron Curtain, even that officialy was forbidden not only in Poland but also in East Germany.

And it was in 'Bravo', maybe in 1977 or even 1978 that I first saw David Cassidy's pic. How he looked like. I couldn't believe that someone was so beautiful..and I thought how life was unfair for me, why I was born in this prison, a communist country, and not in a free world. I also remember that it was first of all an article about Shaun, who at the time was a big star, and DC was mentioned as a step-brother and a former teen idol.

This is a very nice video I've seen today for the first time.

So I'm checking every single Bravo's article posted on the website, and it's truly amazing how often David was written about and his pic was on the cover. So far we have 44 Bravo issues with articles on DC, or with his huge posters. The first one is from January 3, 1973, the last from June 27 1985. They are amazing. In March 1973 issue we can see a pic with David reading about himself in 'Bravo', there were concerts' pics and German charts because in the 70s David's hits were very high on the charts and many became number 1.

There were articles about DC's love life and his naked pics from Rolling Stone magazine. The readers were asked what they thought about Annie Leibovitz' photographs of David, and everybody thought they were great.

And 35 000 love letters? In 1974 'Bravo' asked its readers to write to David, and all of those 35 000 letters were delivered through the Bravo correspondent Francis Schoenberger to David's house in LA. Yes, I know he got millions of letters in the 70s, from the US, Canada and from the UK fans, and Australia, New Zealand or Japan..But the story of those 35 000 letters is the proof how popular he was in Europe. Fans took pains to write to him in English, there were poems and drawings, best wishes..So much love and dreams, and of course now all those letters are not exist anymore, we can only read about them in Bravo issue, published 50 years ago..
