David Cassidy in The Story of Pop

The Story of Pop was a 26- part documentary broadcast on BBC Radio 1 (September 1973-March 1974), and also was published a printed version of the series. An article on David was in Part 6. I have my own copy of it, and we have it on the website too. This is the link to it.

Truly speaking I've forgotten about it for quite a lot of time, but while searching for the right title on today's blog, I've remembered one sentence from that article, (btw I wish I knew the author's name) something about DC being a personality not someone who performed a specific kind of music, or something like that. So I've found the article and read it one more time. And I really like it.

Maybe a song first. October is 'Dreams Are Nuthin' More Than Wishes' month. The album, so special for DC was released in October 51 years ago. There is something autumnal in this album, in the lyrics, the motif of passing is present, he was only 23 years old but already with a lot of experience. 'Love left me behind like summer leaves the grapes on the vine..'

David Cassidy told in many interviews how he loved rock and blues music, but when he had an opportunity at last to record what he wanted, the result was an album that couldn't be classified as one genre. It was David's own, very personal, concept album. He said that if people didn't like 'Dreams Are Nuthin' More Than Wishes', they didn't like him. What a brave statement, but so true. He was 'telling' us his story, singing about his wishes and dreams, about disappointments. And the way he was singing..I always listen to 'Hold On Me' with my headphones on, and it's like David Cassidy was shared his thoughts only with me. It's just amazing.

But let's return to the article. Interesting read, written really without prejudices (1973!) and with an understanding of his situation, 'TPF was a series which was both to imprison an create him'. About his schedule, 'it all becomes like working in a factory'. The author was impressed by the level of adulation,  David's success, and his stage act. 'He starts to work his audience in a cat-like way, stalking hither and thither, prowling along to the front of the stage to the ecstasy of his fans. He represents purity - a safe way of living dangerously.'

And about David himself. His sense of humour. And, 'A 23 year- old who realises what has happened - grateful for what has happened - but on the other hand more determined to be treated seriously in the future.'

There is also that sentence I remembered from the first reading, 'He is that precious managerial property, a personality rather that any one type of musical performer. This should guarantee his future."

And one more thing. David's favourite long-haired cat's name was Boots.
