I Can't Get Next To You / Norman Whitfield, Barrett Strong

Let's first watch The Temptations performing this great song, 'Can't Get Next To You' on The Ed Sullivan Show, in 1969.

No 1 Billboard single for Temptations in October 1969. A big hit at the time when 19 year old David Cassidy was working on the set of his first TV show. The episode of 'Survivors' with DC was aired on November 7, 1969.

Unfortunately, no copy of this episode survived, we don't have a single photo from it. But it's amazing what we can read in comments of  'Survivors" trailer on YT. That there is a VCR video of each episode of it in the UCLA's archive. So maybe one day, we'll be able to see episode 7 with David Cassidy in his TV debut. The cast of that short-lived soap opera was really impressive.

There is a chapter called 'The Soundtrack Of My Youth' in David Cassidy's autobiography. How extraordinary for him was to meet, make friends or even work with musicians he loved when he was an unknown teen. To become one of them, to be respected by the greatest. That must have been amazing.

He wrote about meeting some of his musical idols. Elvis. Paul McCartney. Harry Nilsson. Brian Wilson and the others members of 'Beach Boys'. And John Lennon.

And maybe you don't know, but Elliot Mintz has just published a book called (not very modest title), 'We All Shine On : John, Yoko and Me'. There is a video with Elliot Mintz signing his book in October this year, answering questions, and we can see some great pics of John, Yoko and Elliot. I've had no patience or time to watch it, but I'd love to know something more about what's in the book, and maybe if Elliot has written about introducing John Lennon to David Cassidy...

But let's return to 'Can't Get Next To You'. David Cassidy was a kid from the 60s all his life (if I can put it this way), it was his decade, the happiest time for him, he loved many songs from the 60s and recorded them himself. His cover of The Temptations' hit is from 2011.

Just amazing, so exciting and really nice video, it's a shame less than 6k views after 10 years.

This is something I write so often, but it's worth repeating all over again. Only the greatest performers can make something new of the song everybody knows. Add something very own and personal. And David Cassidy was one of them.
