'Shirley Jones And The Partridge Family'
or 'Only Time Will Tell'. It was so dfficult to decide on the title for today's entry. Or that catchy one "I'm In Love With David Cassidy. He Really Turns Me On'.
I've read all the articles from the summer of 1970 published on The David Cassidy Official Website. Those old and those posted a few days ago. There are so many of them. They are the proof the great success of TPF was expected and David was on his way to become a new teen idol.
But nothing was left to chance, and on June 27, 1970, a note appeared on Billboard, "Bell Records is launching a $100,000 promotion campaign, combined with a nationwide tour to support not only the record product, but the new ABC TV series, 'The Partridge Family'. Promotion tour started on August 17.
Maybe a song, the second one from the first ever DC's recording session, May 11, 1970.

We can read in serious musical magazines, already in June 1970, that it was David who performed as a lead singer 'with a group in the series', and 'with the real group that recorded the music', and the best sessions musicians in LA and top pop songwrtiers were hired. From the start it was a common knowledge. David Cassidy was the voice of The Partridge Family.
But in some articles we can read quite different stories, and all attention was given to Shirley Jones. E.g. in this article she said that upcoming album was going to be called, 'Shirley Jones And The Partridge Family', and David was only mentioned as one of the kids on the show.

Of course it was a publicity thing, for older audience Shirley Jones was a star, not David. The real craze about him was in teen magazines. Tiger Beat June 1970 - 'The Face of 1970 - David Cassidy' and '..your eyes can't help but notice (and sigh over) his incredble long lashes that crown his strking hazel eyes'
But not only on teen mags were published notes and articles about David. And not only promotional stuff paid by the studio, which didn't hide that it wanted to make a teen idol of David.
Already in the summer 1970 he kept telling (wherever he could) what kind of music he liked, not the songs he recorded for the show. In interviews he looked full of self - confidence. And why not.
Sam Hyman said about DC at the beginning of his career, "I remember when it was just starting to take off and I was sitting in David's bedroom and he was strumming the guitar. ITILY was already out but we had no idea how big he was going to be. (...) He said something to me like, 'I'm going to be big. I'm going to be bigger than Elvis.' (...) It's interesting that he had that much confidence in himself, I guess that's the part of what made him who he is. There was a level of confidence, which might have been construed by some as cockness.' (David Cassidy : Could It Be Forever?, 2007. p.95-96

And many newsrooms in the US were sent questions about David. Like this one, 'The only new series I'm looking forward to is The Partridge Family'. And you know why...I am in love with David Cassidy..'
