Teen Dream / Shaun Cassidy

I've got Shaun Cassidy's 'Born Late' album. From my dear son-in-law. There is really an impressive vinyl shop in Warsaw, near the place my daughter and her family live.

About 3 years ago my 4-year-old (at the time)  grandson ran into the shop and called (very loud), 'Have you got David for my grandma?!' And that's how it started. This shop is an old one, but no one ever asked about David Cassidy's albums. It's changed now, Ive got there some DC's vinyls,  America's, and even 4 first 10cc albums.

And now there is ALWAYS a DC album on sale in this shop, thanks to me and  my family, I think it's the only place in the whole country when you can get a David Cassidy's album, and a few days ago besides 'Cherish', there was also Shaun's bestselling second solo album from 1977, 'Born Late'

But let's first watch wonderful new tribute video made by Sharron Liddle. Cassidy Brothers..what a shame we didn't have video of this performance.

'Born Late'. In the late 70s we had much more freedom in Poland (for a few years), and I knew Shaun and two of his songs, 'That's Rock&Roll' and 'Da Doo Ron Ron', but I didn't like them and I didn't like Shaun. At the time I was listening to The Police, Dire Straits and Joy Division. I didn't like his voice and even the way he looked. Yes, I wasn't a fan. But it was nearly 50 years ago, so when my son-in-law asked me if I wanted a Shaun Cassidy's album, my answer was, 'Yes, of course'. After all that album peaked at #6 in the US in 1977. I wanted to give the album and Shaun a try.

The first song on 'Born Late' was written by a teenage Shaun Cassidy. It is called 'Teen Dream'. It was used in one of The Hardy Boys' episode.

Some very familiar names appeared on this album. Jay Gruska played keyboards and co-wrote one song ('Baby,Baby,Baby') with intro very similar to 'I Never Saw You Coming'. David Jollife and Bill Mumy together with Shaun have written a song called 'It's Up To You', and actually this is my favourite track from the album.

There are two hits released as singles, 'Hey Deanie' by Eric Carmen, and John Sebastian's 'Do You Believe In Magic'. And surprise, surprise but Shaun also liked Young Rascals and he recorded 'A Girl Lke You'.

Tom Bahler and Ron Hicklin are credited as background vocals. The album is very nicely edited, and I'm very glad I have it now in my collection. Nice songs, but nothing more (in my opinion of course). I've really tried to be objective, not comparing Shaun to David.

Shaun Cassidy played keyboards on this album and wrote or co-wrote half of the songs. He really had a nice voice. But while I was listening to 'Born Late', I remembered how once I showed my younger sister a video with DC and Shaun singing 'Tell Me It's Not True'. My sister doesn't remember the 70s music. She was a teen in the 80s. That's hers decade.

She was listening and smiling a little bit, but when David sang, 'Say I only dreamed it..'..she stopped smiling and whispered to herself, 'Oh, yes..'. And that was the best comment.
