March 1972. Houston, TX

David Cassidy performed in San Antonio on March 3, 1972, and maybe spent the night there, or more probably right after it went to Houston, where he was to appear twice on March 5 as the star of The Houston Livestock and Rodeo.

There is only 200 miles from San Antonio to Houston, maybe he just flew there, 50 years ago flying was much easier.

Houston Astrodome was opened in 1965, it was the world's first multi-purpose, domed sports stadium, seated around 50 000 fans. The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is the largest in the world, it was founded n 1931.

In 1972 there was the 40th anniversary of that big event. It started on February 23 and was closed on the day David Cassidy performed there, on March 5.

Each day was a different star. For example on February 25 (when the Rodeo started) - Ray Rogers & Dale Evans. On March 1 - The 5th Dimension, Wayne Newton on March 2. Glen Campbell on March 4, and on the last day - David Cassidy.

We are very lucky having an interview with David, conducted after his first performance, so we know how unwell he was that day. Some fragments, "David Cassidy's handshake felt like he was running a fever - and he probably was. The poor boy got flu a few days ago in LA (...) 'I'm a little under the weather', he admitted sadly' (...) He looked a pale, tired shadow of that little girl's dream, who had just set squeal records for the biggest rodeo attendance ever (33, 620) at a closing day matinee (He set a closing night record, too, of 23,108. (..) 'And I couldn't even sing', David sighed, 'I was so hoarse"

Yes, at last some reliable numbers of the attendance that day. This is the article

And there is also a review of his performance, and the problems he faced playing  Astrodome.

We have some great pics on the website, from both shows, and of  David in the hotel, giving interviews between concerts.
