Fever/ Eddie Cooley, John Davenport
Peggy Lee's famous song was a cover, but many people think that 'Fever' was her composition
And in a way it is, becuse she added new arrangment and lyrics. It's her signature song. She recorded it in 1958, and Elvis his own great version in 1960.
A lot of artists covered the song, we can read the list of them in Wikipedia. Madonna, Petula Clark, Michael Buble, Helen Shapiro, Bette Midler..even Suzi Quatro. There is no David's name on that list and it's a shame because his version was great and different.
Of course the song was recorded in many different styles. I like flamboyant Jam's version from 1982. Fabulous.

This is one of those songs which everybody knows and it looks very easy to sing. But first of all you should have a very good voice and know what you are singing about. So many covers are just boring, because (if I can put it this way) a voice and a beat are the most important instruments in that song. That's all. Michael Buble's live exciting and elegant version.

So it was a bold David's choice to record 'Fever' for his 1973 concept album, 'Dreams Are Nuthin' More Than Wishes'. I've read some 'Dreams'' reviews, and it seems that not everybody likes his 'Fever', or don't know what to write about it. Btw David refers to Peggy Lee's version in the liner notes. 'Respectable', as we can read in this interesting review from 2016.
And I think the answer is simple. David's version is first of all very sensual, his voice...the pace of the song, it starts slowly..he begins a.. conversation with his girlfriend..Yes, it was a brilliant idea, to change a song into a kind of a dialogue with his backing singers. This is the most sensual version of that song I know. Young David's fans in 1973 had a big surprise. I wonder what they had thought about 'Fever'. David knew what he was singing about..from start to finish..
David Cassidy..he gave us fever..
