New York City Life / David Cassidy

or..man in the middle. This is so symbolic that DC was born in 1950. He was taught to love music from the first part of the century..Gershwin, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, his fav film was Casablanca, he saw it many times, and he sang so beautifully, 'As Time Goes By'. He was so romantic, David Cassidy was..

This is so beautiful. His voice and how he looked. Timeless.

On the other hand he loved the music of his generation, rock and blues. And himself became a pop icon. A true man in the middle, and such separate, didn't belong to any group, so it was so cruel that he was pigeonholed. 'A singer for little girls'.

I was so irritated when someone once wrote, 'DC wanted respect from his peers, and his peers were Donny Osmond and Michael Jackson.' Both of them  artists known and loved all over the world, but  first of all much younger than DC. And a lot of great, unique musicians were born the same year as David. Natalie Cole, Peter Gabriel, Karen Carpenter, Peter Frampton, Stevie Wonder, Bernie Taupin, Suzi Quatro, Ann Wilson, Tom Petty, Dan Peek..and many more. For many of them their early influences were The Beatles and The British Invasion Bands and Artists. A lot of them were taught classical music (Peter Frampton or Peter Gabriel), and as teens they played many instruments..

So it's not a surprise that David wrote such an amazing song. 'New York City Life'. From 'A Touch Of Blue', released in 2003. A song that could have been written by one of those great artists from the 30s or 40s. Jon O'Brien wrote in his review (All Music) : 'The album's sole new composition, the self-penned authentic big-band number, 'New York City Life', suggests it's a shame a few more made the cut.'

And the lyrics is also just fabulous, autobiographical..there is everything in it, his glory past, the girls who dated him and wanted to make a career that way, how tiring living in LA was..and scary  because of the eartquake (1994)..it was never his city, he loved New York. And I think that New York City Life was also a kind of metaphor, that at last he was free..and could live where he felt happy..

DC : Could It Be Forever?, 2007 : ''I wanted to record the way Sinatra did and at the same studio where all those fabulous Big Band recordings were done for so many years. Nat King Cole, Sinatra. Bobby Darin. Sammy Davis, Jr.'

And David Cassidy
