'Cassidy Was There..'

The title of the note published on March 11, 1972 on a newspaper called 'New York Daily News'. It was about DC's stay in London in February 1972,  but what a great title for a blog on David's the most famous and important concert.

Madison Square Garden, NYC. March 11, 1972. The 53rd anniversary will be tomorrow. We know that there was proposal for David to play this concert already in November 1971, but Ruth Aarons thought that at the time he was not ready yet for it, and besides his November schedule was insane without it, and last but not least he was very tired and in need of a break.. When the time came, March 1972, he was not very well, he was still fighting the flu, as we can read in Rolling Stone article written by Robin Green.

But regardless how he felt that concert was his moment of glory. It was Saturday.

The concert aroused an unusual level of interest, and tickets just flew out. At the press conference before the concert, the room was packed with photographers and reporters. DC looked calm and serious and very sure of himself.

The next day appeared a lot of reviews. Experienced journalists tried to describe the event. How to explain this adulation and hysteria.

'The significant element here is sensuality and theater, not music. Cassidy's ambiguously sexy prancing is on the same fresh-fased, wide-eyed style that made the early Beatles so successful with teenagers (and so accetable to parents).  And his understanding of the implicit dramatics that he can stimulate when he struts around the stage in his gleaming white jumpsuit reveals markedly mature familiarity with the core qualities of show business. ( Don Heckman, New York Times)

'They screamed, shouted, jumped up and down. They clapped their hands and all but had heart palpitations as the frail-looking, long-haired David gyrafed around the stage. (...) It was hard to hear him over the noise of the audience, but just seeing him there was enough for most.' ( Patricia O'Haire, New York Daily News)

I like the most what Ralpf Graves, Managing Editor of 'Life' was written. His 12-year old daughter was David's fan and the ticket for MSG concert was a birthday present for her. She said, 'I'll remember this day all the rest of my life.'

It's hard to find the set list from this concert. We know he sang 16 songs and of course we have that truly iconic video with the concert's opener, 'I Can Feel Your Heartbeat'. David looked so charismatic in his white jumpsuit, an epitome of superstar. And he was so happy, we can see his commitment and his sheer joy on many pics from this day..

And 'Cassidy Was There'. This is the link.
