I Write The Songs (A Touch Of Blue)
Sometimes a song follows you. It's happened to me recently, with 'I Write The Songs'. Often randomly chosen to listen to at home or in a car. And yesterday while driving I chose accidently a bonus disc from 'A Touch of Blue' album, and of course 'I Write The Songs' from it.
'A Touch of Blue' was released in the UK in November 2003, by Universal, produced by Ted Carfrae, and all the songs, except one, (New York City Life' penned by DC himself) were covers. With the album there was a bonus CD with 10 songs ; 7 David Cassidy's solo hits from the 70s and 3 with The Partridge Family's. Both discs were impeccably produced, excellent sound, David's voice in great form, powerful and still so full of emotions.
DC was very pleased with that album. "I recorded the 'Touch of Blue' album in Hollywood. It's one of my two or three favourite recordings of mine because it was recorded live (..) It was as organic as I could possibly make it - live vocals and singing with a live band and different rhythm sections put together for different tracks. I wanted to record the way Sinatra did and the same studio where all those fabulous Big Band recordings were done for so many years. Nat King Cole. Sinatra. Bobby Darin. Sammy Davis, Jr." (David Cassidy: 'Could It Be Forever ?', 2007, p.396)
He really wanted to be like one of them. And on this album he was. His distinctve vocal style, his perfectionism, everythng about this recording of 'I Write The Songs' was carefully prepeared, crafted, thought about.

Amazing. And I really like the video, with young and older David's pics. I'm not a fan of that bonus CD. I got 'A Touch of Blue' from my son-in-law last year and I listened to the bonus disc maybe once and not very carefully. I thought it very boring and with nothing new to the originals, all the songs worse than the 70s recordings. But yesterday 'I Write The Songs' simply stopped me in my tracks. It was like a new song, singing from completely different point of view than in 1975. It was a mature, experienced David, looking at his old career with..a touch of blue, pride and sadness, Great and very moving recording.
And today 'I Write the Songs' again. This time something absolutely unexpected posted by Andrea from NYC. Can you believe it, Bruce Kimmel singing it in 1975!. And it looks he had no idea (even when this video was published on YT, in 2019) that David recorded 'I Write the Songs' before Barry M. did it..
