Up To Date

The second Partridge Family's album was released on February 12, 55 years ago. In 1971. On Bell.

There is an article on the website, called 'David Cassidy Young Self-Made Superstar', published in January 1971. The author described David, "A quiet, rather shy lad. But behind those calm grey eyes (..) there's a deceptive intelligence, an awareness. The knowledge of showbusiness flows in his blood.". David said, "The music we do, is bubblegum to the trade. I think it's a little bit better than most bubblegum. Sophisticated bubblegum. What is not is George Harrison. That's what I want be doing." At the time George Harrison's first solo album was a great hit. David Cassidy was young and he wanted to become an independent. recording artist.

After  55 years the music he called bubblegum became pop classic, even the song he really hated.

DC was 100% pro, always, deadly serious about his work, the quality of it. He suffered because he had no control over the quality of merchandise, the things with his face on it. He cared for the quality of the songs he was to sing. But Wes Farrell didn't like when someone interfere with his work. David was to sing, not to produce himself. The first serious crisis happened very quickly. On November 12, 1970 while recording 'Doesn't Somebody Want To Be Wanted' for 'Up To Date' album.

As we know at the end David had to give up. It was very bitter pill to swallow. Not only he was shown his place, but again Jack was not on his side. Many years later, in 2014, DC told during the concert, that he surrended when Jack told him to do it, as David put it, it was, "a parental pressure which helped him decide to go ahead with the song."

'Up To Date' is a wonderful and very successful album. It spent 53 weeks on the chart, peaking at number 3 in April 1971. We fans, love all the songs on this album.  There were three strong numbers from Tony Romeo on it, 'You Are Always On My MInd' (David liked this song himself). 'Morning Rider On the Road', and 'That'll Be The Day'.

Three songs written by Garry Goffin with Wes Farrell's help, including another Top 10 hit, 'I'll Meet You Halfway', 'I'm Here, You're Here', and 'There's No Doubt In My Mind'.

It's hard to watch this video and listen to magical young David Cassidy's voice without getting emotional.

Also on 'Up To Date' there was 'She'd Rather Had a Rain' by Terry Cashman and Tommy West. Charming 'I'll Leave Myself A Little Time' by Steve Dossic. Two songs written by that profilic trio known from the first album - Wes of course, Jim Cretecos and Mike Appel - 'Umbrella Man' and the biggest hit from 'Up To Date' - 'Doesn't Somebody Want To Be Wanted".

And last, but not least, 'Lay It On The Line', the first song written all by David Cassidy which was recorded and released. Of course with Wes Farrell's help, according to the credits. What a man Wes Farrell was!
