As Time Goes By / Herman Hupfeld

Image
From 'Casablanca', David Cassidy's favourite film. Somehow this song started playing in my head yesterday while I was watching a British TV series, 'Thriller', a very old one, from the early 70s. In many episodes of 'Thriller' there were American guest stars, and in the one I saw yesterday, first aired in 1974, George Chakiris. He was very good on it and surprisingly looking much better and younger than on The Partridge Family. Less makeup I think.  George Chakiris is a remarkable man, he was one of the dancers in Marilyn Monroe's classic number 'Diamonds Are a Best Girl's Friend' (1953), he got an Academy Award for 'West Side Story' in 1961 (and it was Shirley Jones who gave him an Oscar), he is a jewelery designer and has own brand. And he is 92 years old.  And while watching George Chakiris in this very English crime story, I was thinking why David Cassidy never appeared on any English TV series in the 70s. Yes, I know that in 1974...

'I Was Always Proud Of It, But'

Image
David Cassidy said these words at the beginning of an extremely interesting conversation with Michael J. Baker, Jr. He said that he was proud of 'the pop aspect of my career, but..', nothing could be compared with his role in Blood Brothers. When I was in Wiltshire  a few years ago, me and my friend B. were hiking a lot and talking a little bit about David. About his private life (that was fun) and also about serious things. At the time I didn't know DC's career as I do now, and didn't watch many interviews, and I couldn't understand why B. kept telling me that David Cassidy first of all was an actor, and that he always wanted to be an actor, not a singer. Even that he performed at the music theatre a lot. Let's listen again to David Cassidy singing 'Any Dream Will Do'. I've heard this song ...many times or even more, but listening to his performance is always a very emotional experience. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KdArwUmGXIs Of course B. w...

I Was Running The Opposite Way / Irwin Levine and L.Russell Brown

Image
What an amazing and unusual song for Keith Partridge, even for Keith in 1973, because this song is from the Bulletin Board sessions, and was slated for release on that 10th, planned, but later aborted album. The lyrics and David's seductive voice.. Really good quality sound in this video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hc0x6emaQn0 This song has been playing in my head today, I don't know who David was thinking about, sure he was thinking about someone, maybe even we can guess her name. Anyway I've been thinking about our Petition of course, and why it's so difficult to make people sign it. Of course I understand that there are fans who don't trust social media, they are not on FB or anywhere, I have such English friends, DC's fans, whom I couldn't convince any way that nothing terrible would happen when they signed. Also the process of signing itself is a litte bit, can't find the right word, anyway not so simple, you have to confirm your email, and som...

From Australia With Love.

Image
Or 'Love Must Be the Answer', I've been struggling today for the right title for that amazing story about one David's fan from Australia. A lot of us know it of course, but I'm sure there are some new (and old) fans, who never heard about Lyn and that she won the 'Hard Quiz'. But first a song. I've just had a short holiday at the Polish seaside, 3 days of doing nothing, only reading, walking, and sitting on the beach, and listening to David's music. It's such a pleasure to look at the sea and listen to DC's voice. His songs sound even better.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yc2LdAbrY4A Someone wrote in comment 3 months ago, 'This song is absolutely stunning!' Oh yes. Everything about this song is stunning, but first of all, young David Cassidy's interpretation.  He was smiling in the music scene from The Partridge Family, but that lyrics is  heartbreaking. Just listen to this recording altered to reflect David's true voice. I...

The Importance of Writing About David

Image
Not a very original title, I know (copyright Oscar Wilde), but somehow it's popped in my head while walking on a beach. I'm in Sopot, at the Polish seaside, just for 3 days break.  It's because of painfully small number of 'likes' the last new footage posted on the website has got. Less than 500 after 6 days. And it's truly sensational, David Cassidy going to Manchester to play his last concert in the 70s. Maybe a song.. https://youtu.be/QtNW8h6gPjA?si=9b87n4X9rOxdq500 And I remember how a few years ago a DC Bravo poster got 4k 'likes' and who knows how many comments. Sure I know that soon will be the 7th painful anniversary and we, David's fans, are in our 60s now (mostly), and it's difficult to keep this flame burning without new songs, new interviews and new pics. But from time to time something new appears and it's when we really can realise how many of us left, at least on social media. https://youtu.be/_Ad-cFYEJJ4?si=bDvNrmRnXmihPxKe My...

Jamming With Eric And Gerry

Image
An interview with Gerry Beckley was published on Rock Cellar 2 days ago, about upcoming new/old America's album. Old, because it's a live album from 1975. 'America with George Martin conducting The Symphony Orchestra Live from the Hollywood Bowl 1975'. It was Sunday, August 3, started at 7.30 pm, rather expensive tickets, $5.50-8.50. I've been America's fan since the 70s, maybe not very keen one, but I regret never saw the band live, and now it's too late, because some time ago Gerry resigned from touring with Dewey Bunnell. He lives in Australia with his family, and his family is the most important for him. Maybe a song. Written by David Cassidy and Gerry Beckley. It's such a gem of a song, literally sparkling, they were so talented, David and Gerry, great musicians and songwriters, and with David's fabulous voice and the harmonies.. it should have been a hit, and they should have written much more songs together  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=izp...

'Don't Be Sad For Me..'

Image
It was a pure accident that while driving yesterday, I was listening to EFX soundtrack. I have a CD with it, and rather an old car, with a CD player. And the song from EFX, 'Tonight', literally stopped me in my tracks. Sure, I've heard  'Tonight' a few times, but never very carefully listened to it, and yesterday the lyrics of that song and first of all David's voice..amazing. He was truly one in a kind performer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d51RMaLuLnw Just wonderful. How he did it, that every song he performed seems to be about him. Or even more, about him and a listener.  And I even don't know who wrote this particular song which comes from the original version of the show. Or truly speaking I don't know who was singing with David. Somehow it's not important.  Of course David Cassidy wasn't the only one who combined his career as an actor, singer, or even a teen idol, with successes in musical theater or Las Vegas. Donny Osmond, David Esse...

'Tired, Yes I Am..'

Image
I've thought about less dramatic title, 'On a Train To Manchester' or something like that, but since Jane has posted this video, David's sad eyes and this song are on my mind,, We've known about this video for years, some screenshots are on Pinterest, and pics of David travelling to Manchester were published in British press in May 1974. But pics can be misleading, they don't do it all, so this footage is really very special. Someone has written in comments (her name is Barbara Fowles)  'I think David was not keen being filmed when he was relaxing, sees the camera as prying eyes.' Yes, it's true, even that besides David, his entourage, a lot of journalists were on that train and David gave some interviews. But yes, filming him while eating, such lack of privacy, but after 50 years this footage is priceless, and every detail is important. The service, English food, English countryside.. The White City experience was traumatic for him. He looks more li...

Breaking Up Is Hard To Do / Neil Sedaka, Howard Greenfield.

Image
I've written about this song a few times, but yesterday while tidying my records, DVD and vinyls, I started first watching, ('Keith and Lauriebelle', Season 4, Episode 19), and later listening to my singles collection.  I don't have many singles, but they are so precious, all of them bought at Swindon's charity shops. In the 70s, David's albums and singles, solo or with Partridge Family, sold millions of copies in the UK, so it's nothing unusual to find them in local charity shops.  I have in my collection Partridge Family maxi single released in 1972, 'Breaking Up Is Hard To Do/ I Think I Love You/ I'll Meet You Halfway'. It hit No. 3 on the UK chart on July 15, 1972. And stayed on the charts for 13 weeks. David Cassidy as Keith Partridge singing 'Breaking Up Is Hard To Do', in the music scene on Episode 12 from Season 3. It was first aired on December 8, 1972. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q5fPDYPk8YE Impressive number of more than 2 ...

David Cassidy On the Bravo-Disco 37 Hits Chart

Image
In September 1975, David Cassidy's single, 'Get It Up For Love' topped very important in Europe, 'Bravo' chart. 'I Write the Songs' got to #7. But that was not everything,  David's first RCA album, 'The Higher They Climb, The Harder They Fall', on that same chart, in the same week, peaked at number 1. So impressive. Bravo readers voted David Cassidy the best singer in 1973, 1974 and 1975, and the 3rd one in 1976. We should also remember that  'Bravo' was read not only in West Germany, but everywhere in Europe, by millions of teens on both sides of the Iron Curtain.   But knowing and seeing are two different things and it was something special for me to see a screenshot from Bravo posted yesterday, on our Great Britain Group. With that chart from September 1975. David Cassidy was in Europe in June and July 1975,  to promote his music. The first stop was London, later he was in Holland, Germany, Spain, Italy and France. Henry Diltz was with...

September 1972

Image
52 years ago, in September, 1972, David Cassidy was playing concerts, 7 that month (1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 23, 24) and one in October. Those were his last in his native country in the 70s. He had no idea  his next tour in the US would be exactly 19 years later, in September 1991. In 1972 David played 62 concerts. It's difficult to believe how hard he was working that year. Filming the show, recording albums and touring in the US (and Canada), everywhere. Everybody knew there was no time to lose and that David's career in America was slowing down.  Yes, he played the MSG concert in March, but his gig at the Hollywood Bowl was cancelled because of poor sales. And  we can read in some articles from 1972 that some of his concerts were attended by far fewer spectators than the year before. But always he was 100% pro and gave everything. " David Cassidy Excites Crowd' by Andrew Reschke, Syracuse Herald Journal, September 25, 1972, "David Cassidy gave a vigorous performance befo...
