Some Birthdays and 'Somebody Wants To Love You'

Image
We've been celebrating the 50th anniversary of David Cassidy's European leg of his 1974 World Tour, but in May there are more important dates connected with David.  Actually so many that I don't know where to start. The best will be with the song, one of the first two  DC recorded for The Partridge Family, on May 11, 1970. DC wrote about this first session in his autobiography. "I was nervous. I didn't want to screw up or cause problems for all these pros who had no idea who I was. We'd been chatting and I'd hear some voice on the loudspeaker saying, 'Could you please ask the singer, whatever his name is, to shut up?' or 'Can you ask the singer not to slow down?', or 'Can you ask the singer not to rush?" (David Cassidy : Could It Be Forever?', 2007, p. 83) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QXk15tpfd9Q They very quickly learnt his name and more. Mike Melvoin, "We really loved David. David was a joy in the studio. We had a lot ...

When I'm a Rock'n'Roll Star/ David Cassidy

Image
David Cassidy didn't perform this song very often.  It was written by him for his first RCA album, I'm sure he worked very hard writing music and lyrics on his own, it's a painfully personal song.  He played it during his UK tour in 1985, making it a kind of just an exciting rock number, but I much prefer how he performed it as a former rock star Joey Mitchell on Alfred Hitchcock Presents, in the episode called 'Career Move'. It was first aired on May 22, 1988, 36 years ago.  It's just a short fragment in the film, but I think recording his own song, and playing a former teen idol, and as we know David Cassidy used to play for bigger audience in the 70s than it was shown in the film, doing this scene must have been emotional for him. https://www.davidcassidy.com/fansite/TvFilmPages/AlfredHitchcockPresents.html We have an interview done while David was filming that episode. He said how well he understood the character he was playing. https://www.davidcassidy.com/...

The World Tour 1974. The Legacy

Image
It has been emotional time, writing entries and publishing fans stories about David Cassidy's 1974 World Tour.  50 years ago David Cassidy was saying goodbye to his fans and being a teen idol. I couldn't stop thinking how he would have celebrated it if..Maybe a special concert would have been organized, or a new album.  I'm very happy that some wonderful stories about seeing David in concert in 1974 have appeared on my blog. Written by fans.  It started with the entry about David Cassidy in Holland, this one was not only about 1974 and was actually written by me, but I've got all info from Marjon Hoogendam-Landmeter, and I appreciate her trust, the things she's told me about David Cassidy. https://talkingaboutdavid.blogspot.com/2024/02/im-man-david-cassidy-in-holland.html There is also the entry about David's popularity in Japan, all his albums were released there and many compilations, and about his concerts in Japan (and Hong Kong) during his 1974 World Tour h...

May 28, Tuesday. We have a set list and audio of this last David Cassidy's World Tour concert, maybe not very good quality, but nevertheless so moving. https://www.davidcassidy.com/fansite/ConcertPages/1974May28_ConcertAudio.mp3 We also have on the website some amazing photographs shared recently by Lorraine. They are truly outstanding. https://www.davidcassidy.com/fansite/ConcertPages/1974May28_Lorraine.html Very emotional day for all of those lucky fans who saw David Cassidy in Manchester 50 years ago. It was also a very special concert for him, so let's read first what David Cassidy wrote about it in his autobiography. "The crowd, knowing it was my absolute farewell show, made more noise than any I'd ever heard. I had to stuff cotton in my ears. I had a Marshall amp turned all the way up to ten to try to project over all the screaming. I could barely hear anything I was doing. That was an amazing night. The crowd gave me so much energy. I remember running off the st...

'For The Love Of Darling David.."

I have a very special collection of the original articles published in the UK in the week after David Cassidy's White City Stadium concert. Most of them are on the website (scans), but it's something absolutely different and very special, heartbreaking even, to have the originals. Maybe something from 'Cassidy Live!' first. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yy2pxP9Y5Do&list=PLWcJ94kdcJRGmLdmMbEH6O61O2tRRh7-n&index=11 How it happened that I have this unusual collection? In 1974 my close friend B. was 13 and lived in Wiltshire. She was a fan, loved David but going for his concert was out of the question. But later that year, she was in London visiting her family. And for whatever reason (maybe there was a strike, not unusual thing in the UK in the 70s) large piles of newspapers were lying on the street. The Times, Daily Mirror, Daily Mail, The Sun, Daily Express...She cut out all the articles about David from them. When I visited her 2 years ago, she told me she wan...

I Was at The David Cassidy Concert at White City Stadium by Doreen Walker

I WAS AT THE DAVID CASSIDY CONCERT AT WHITE CITY STADIUM, 26 TH MAY 1974. With the 50 th anniversary of  David’s concert at the White City Stadium on 26 th May I thought I would put into words why I needed to attend this concert and all the excitement about that day in 1974. To understand why getting to David’s White City concert in 1974 was a big deal for me, not only because of seeing David, here is a little background to my life at that point in time.  I had been subjected to severe bullying in the September and October 1973 to the point that I suffered from some sort of mental breakdown causing panic/anxiety attacks either before I left home to go to school, on the way or once I arrived at school, back then no one understood about these attacks.  Once I was at home, I was fine, and my comfort from all of this was listening to David’s music, buying and reading any magazine I could get my hands on with something about David in these magazines.  It was dur...

Play It Again, Sam

Image
Sam Hyman has birthday today.  He looked older than David when they were young, but actually it was David who was born a few weeks earlier. Sam in Los Angeles, David on the other side of the country, Sam's father's name was also Jack. Both their fathers died when their sons were young. Sam was 19, David 26.   In 2012 Mark Wyckoff interviewed Sam Hyman and wrote a great article to celebrate the 50th anniversary of this wonderful friendship, so important for both of them. David Cassidy and Sam Hyman met in 1962.. https://www.davidcassidy.com/fansite/InPrintPages/2012%20Sam%20Hyman%20interview.pdf So many wonderful stories, so generously shared with us. The story of their friendship, school years, Laurel Canyon, later David's stardom and that insane time when he was the most popular world teen idol. He wanted to have Sam by his side, a friend he could always trust, and Sam too had his share of fun and fame.. When it was over, in 1974, Sam  had to start from the beginnin...

"Cassidy And the Raindance Kids"

Image
Daily Mirror, Friday, May 24, 1974. I have this original article. Story by Sidney Williams, Pictures by Peter Stone. My friend B. cut this article from Daily Mirror half a century ago. It looks so ancient. I've had to improve this pic a litlle bit.  I'm reading this article again, it's just amazing how David Cassidy was popular in the UK, what a mega star he was, followed everywhere he went, and how people don't remember about it now.  Only fans and some very old DJs, like Tony Prince who is on this pic with David. "David Cassidy played the traditional pop stars' game of dodging the fans yesterday. The 24-year-old American led the kids a merry dance through the rain in London. He spent the morning recording a Radio Luxembourg show, which will be broadcast tomorrow, after he nipped in through the back door while his followers blocked the road outside the front of the studio in Hertford Street. He waved to them from the balcony.." And we have this show on ...

"I Know These Three Concerts Are Going To Be the Best.."

We've been waiting and waiting and suddenly this special week has come. 50 years ago, May 20 was also on Monday. I can imagine this level of excitement, already on Monday, fans waiting for Friday (Glasgow concert), Sunday (London) and Tuesday (Manchester)..or maybe I can't imagine how it was.  It must have been strange, loving David, and each girl was sure she was the one for him, she was to marry him one day..waiting for his concert, thinking about clothes to wear.. and when the big day came..it must have been disappointment that there were others, thousands of them, all in love, ready to fight for the best place, to be as close to him as possible.. Seeing David in Glasgow, London, Manchester or Sydney, Melbourne or Perth in 1974, it's like being a member of an exclusive club. Sure I'm envious and very grateful for those fans who share their memories with us, those unlucky ones who couldn't see David live for whatever reasons.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yAUKD...

Crazy Over You / David Cassidy

At last I've had some time to check the recent May's updates on The David Cassidy Official Website. I've started from the end, concert pictures published today.  June 30, 2012, South Point Casino Las Vegas. DC at 62 looked just fabulous, and he was so happy on stage. It was such a blessing for David to meet his musical brother, Craig J. Snider. He helped David not to be just a nostalgic act, to change the music he performed and recorded, and move forward. For David, the members of his band became friends, even more.  David Cassidy had so many serious problems in 2011 and 2012, but on stage he felt safe and happy. In many reviews we can read that in 2012 DC played outstanding concerts because he concentrated more on the music not on chatting with the audience. He returned to his roots, the music he loved listening to and playing in the 60s, and the 70s. Blues and rock. David Cassidy playing Crossroads in 2012..Pure rock, such power and excitement, he looked and felt like...
