'Somebody Wants To Love You' / Wes Farrell, Jim Cretecos and Mike Appel

Image
I don't know about you, but I often find myself singing under my breath, "Hey you! It's nothing new, love will be around whatever what you do" or "Hey, stop, stop and look around somebody wants to love you". Let's first listen to the version of this song altered by John Gomolka. I love listening to it with my headphones on, amazing sound, and what a voice 20-year-old David Cassidy had. So strong, so sure of himself, like as if he was doing it for years, and it was his first recording session in his life. 55 years ago, in May 1970. https://www.davidcassidy.com/fansite/DiscographyPages/Somebody%20Wants%20To%20Love%20You_JohnGomolkaVersion.mp3 We have a lot of important anniversaries in May. David Cassidy's World Tour's concerts in Europe, which turned out to be his last in the 70s. Legendary concerts. Grona Lund. De Doelen. Shawfield Stadium. White City Stadium. Manchester Football Club. And actually on this day, May 30, in 1974, Bernadette Whelan ...

'He Should Smile More Often'

Image
Recently someone (sorry can't remember who) has published a page from music magazine, quite popular in the UK in the 80s, called Smash Hits. In Spring of 1985 new singles in that mag were reviewed by Roland Orzabal from Tears For Fears,  In 1985 it was one of the top English pop rock bands.  Interestng read, even more, very sincere, sometimes malicious and  personal reviews. If he liked the song he could write why, with details. If he didn't like... Roland Orzabal wrote nicely about David and  he also tried to write something nice about the song, ''Romance'. This is the review, "I did used to like his records when I was about 9. I've met him a couple of times recently on Roundtable and The Kenny Everett Video Show - he's a nice lad but I think he should smile more often. This record sounds like an intro which never really gets there - a nice enough beat which doesn't really substanitate itself. Maybe I ought to write him a song." Of course we...

Uncle Daddy. And The Last Gift.

Image
I haven't written for quite a lot of time (at least for me it was a long break). It's not that I didn't have anything to write about, but at first I was very busy, later there was Sam Hyman's birthday and I was watching all those incredible videos, and later..I don't know. It's scary how fast one can get used to e.g. not writing. Anyway I'm back. We've just had (2 days ago), the anniversary of the release of the last David Cassidy's album. The EP called 'Songs My Father Taught Me' has just 5 tracks. 'Night and Day', 'Summertime'. 'Wish You Were Here', 'Sweet Little Angel' and Craig J. Snider's composition, 'Till We Meet Again'. Craig said, "We captured that little bit of flame before it was out". The EP became number 1, the top selling jazz release on Amazon.  7 years ago I wrote down for myself a sentence from an Amazon review, "This is his last gift to the fans who stayed with him o...

'We Are Writing The Next Chapter'

Image
First a song about friends. This week we write a lot about friendship.  Sam Hyman and David Cassidy's first of all, but also friendships formed because of David. Fans are meeting today in California to celebrate Sam Hyman's birthday, but also to remember David Cassidy and enjoy each other company. True friendship is as rare and valuable as true love, and this song is about 'false' friends, who befriend us when we are at the top, and David had a lot of false friends when he was a teen idol. Men and women. He wrote about them in his books, some he even mentioned by name. In one TV interview he said that he'd given people money just so they would disappear from his life. It's so emotional to hear David telling about the money stolen from him and those false friends.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=teBSRqlw5kI Let's return to the song, written by a real friend, Richie Furay, and recorded for his great solo album, 'Dance a Little Light' in 1978. 'You...

Happy Birthday Sam!

Image
Actually Sam Hyman was born on May 24, 1950, but 1. some fans have just started packing to go to celebrate his 75th Birthday in California next weekend, and 2, on this day, May 11, in 1974, David Cassidy's single 'If I Didn't Care/Frozen Noses' peaked at # 9 in the UK. The last DC's Top 10 hit in the UK in the 70s. It's just a coincidence, but too good to miss. We still care for David Cassidy, and also for his friend, Sam Hyman. 'If I didn't care, would I feel this way? If it isn't love..' This timeless hit, the lyrics and the music, was written by Jack Lawrence, and first recorded by The Ink Spots in 1939, sold over 19 million copies. Covered by The Platters, Connie Francis (and some others), and with a great success by David.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aiIrTJOLquU Yes, we still care and it'll never change.  Sam Hyman. For the second time in a row, fans are going to celebrate Sam's birthday. With him. I feel so happy for those who ...

I Write The Songs (A Touch Of Blue)

Image
Sometimes a song follows you. It's happened to me recently, with 'I Write The Songs'. Often randomly chosen to listen to at home or in a car. And yesterday while driving I chose accidently a bonus disc from 'A Touch of Blue' album, and of course 'I Write The Songs' from it. 'A Touch of Blue' was released in the UK in November 2003, by Universal, produced by Ted Carfrae, and all the songs, except one, (New York City Life' penned by DC himself) were covers. With the album there was a bonus CD with 10 songs ; 7 David Cassidy's solo hits from the 70s and 3 with The Partridge Family's. Both discs were impeccably produced, excellent sound, David's voice in great form, powerful and still so full of emotions. DC was very pleased with that album. "I recorded the 'Touch of Blue' album in Hollywood. It's one of my two or three favourite recordings of mine because it was recorded live (..) It was as organic as I could possibly ma...

'The Unlikely Teen Idol'

Image
This is amazing how many unknown articles Lanie Bray from Australia has found for us. For us, because all of them are on The  Official Website of David Cassidy. She also has found a lot of new pics, but the articles I'm interested the most. Sometimes there are just short notes from the early 70s informing the world what DC said about this or that, sometimes DC's concerts reviews often including short interviews with him.  I love old posters announcing his gigs, we can learn a lot from them, about ticket prices or the places he performed at and with whom, e.g I've had no idea how often DC performed at state fairs, especially in 1972, and usually at such events he played 2 gigs. Thanks to a concert advert we know that on August 20, 1971, at Indiana State Fair, he played twice, at 1.30 and 5 p.m. It's unbelievable how little information we have on DC's 1971 and 1972 concerts. Several pics, a few audios, a few short videos, that's all. In many cases a scan of an old...

'If Ever Someone..'

Image
David Cassidy's album, 'Romance', was released exactly 40 years ago. In May 1985.  And let's start with 'Someone', the title of today's blog is the beginning of this song written by David, Alan Tarney and Sally Boyden. We stll need David, his music and his smile.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AS3DUlY4t_0 The album was released by Arista Records, but not in the US, and I think some Arista's executives must have had second thoughts about it, when the single from it, 'The Last Kiss', became a hit in Europe. Clive Davis, the Arista president..let's say didn't value DC much. Alan Tarney, the album producer, a musician and songwriter himself, was first of all a successful producer of Cliff Richard and the Norwegian sensation of 1985, trio A-ha. And David Cassidy wanted to be successful again, and of course he needed money, he was still in debt. There were 10 songs on the album, 7 co-written by DC and Alan Tarney. Some of them were Cliff Rich...

What To Ask Henry Diltz? And Johnny Ray Miller

Image
Let's start with a song which often plays in my head since I've decided to go to West Orange (and NYC and some other places) in July. Written by Mark James, from The Partridge Family's Crossword Puzzle. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gqSrTNxV6S8 Yes, it's a long way and my preparations to that journey is a story in itself, a comedy with elements of drama. Going to David Cassidy Historical Marker is a dream comes true, once in a lifetime experience, but of course a huge commitment and a great challenge for me. Or better say a lot of challenges. Money but also many other problems to overcome.  I bought air tickets in January and since then I've been preparing myself every day. I nearly resigned after unexpected, very costly dental surgery in the end of January, and again in March when my car broke down after the marten (a lovely animal) chewed through everything it could in my poor car. I had to spend again a lot of money.  But I didn't give up of course, and in ...
