Together (Havin' A Ball) / Shorty Rogers and Kelly Gordon

I think it's a perfect song for an entry about fans' meetings. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dsMX4LO-Z5s A few days ago some British fans met in Liverpool to remember David Cassidy and his connections with this famous English city. Pauline Tombs has written for us about this meeting. She is is not only David's but also The Beatles' fan and we owe to her the fact that there are places in Liverpool where David Cassidy is commemorated. This is very emotional and also very important that after nearly 7 years that have passed since David Cassidy's death, and against many odds, we, fans, still meet from time to time, in person, to remember David. Also this year.  California Music Hall Of Fame turned out to be a great disappointment, but fans from the US, UK and Canada who came to California in April, had a great time together and once in a lifetime opportunity to meet Sam Hyman. David Cassidy had many friends during his lifetime, but only one so special, only one forev...

'Everything Is Fabulous' or David Cassidy And Carrie Fisher

Image
There is a list on The David Cassidy Official Website, with more than 600 David Cassidy's TV guest appearances. It's not a list of videos we have, sometimes there is only info about a program he guest starred, sometimes only the title of the show, often without an exact date, sometimes is just a month and a year. Or some pics which somehow is even more annoying, because that means that a video exists, only we've had no luck.  And sometimes a miracle happens, as it happened last year when this video appeared after 50 years! I couldn't believe my eyes when I first watched it, because I knew some pics from that program and it was like suddenly those pics started moving..that was truly surreal experience, and it's still so emotional watching David Cassidy on Estelar Del Sabado, in 1973. He was singing live and he looked so beautiful. https://www.davidcassidy.com/fansite/TvFilmPages/1973March_Estelar_Del_Sabado.html It was also a nice surprise, when last year, on DC'...

"Lessons From The Partridge Family"

Image
One more entry about David Cassidy on Spotify, after all Spotify has more than 600 millions active monthly users, so I've thought that it's worth taking a look at it.  So let me tell you that David Cassidy has 152.3K monthly listeners (more than Donny Osmond or Shaun Cassidy), but The Partridge Family is more popular, 266.8K. Of course it's nothing compering to some of DC's friends ; Alice Cooper - 5M, America 10.4M, or even Kim Carnes, who once was a friend, but also his backing singer - 5.6M monthly listeners.  It's a little bit depressing, but that's the way how it is. Maybe a song, from David's album that you don't find on Spotify. And truly speaking this song is not popular on YT either.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Z-aBmyCX10 Of course on Spotify there are podcasts dedicated to David Cassidy, and there are also podcasts where he is just mentioned in an episode.  And today I've listened to an American podcast called 'The Adam and Dr. Dr...

The Magic Of 'Home Is Where The Heart Is'

Image
or David Cassidy on Spotify. Let's start with the first song from this outstanding album released in 1976. We are so lucky that David Cassidy with Steve Ross were in Paris in March 1976, and they appeared on two French TV programes. On March 28 they were together on 'Systeme deux'. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O78YHPADwNo Thanks to my 6 year-old grandson, I've recently rediscovered Spotify again. I had a Spotify account some years ago, but I rarely used it, but my grandson has introduced me to an amazing nature podcast for kids and we enjoy listening to it together. And last week I had a short holiday, and during it I was walking a lot and listening to David Cassidy on Spotify. Another stroke of luck.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftjhmZoDdlE Not all of David's solo albums are on Spotify, but all recorded for Bell Records and for RCA. And it's happened that I've never listened to songs of  'Home Is Where The Heart Is' in the order David place...

Going To Liverpool. "Tell Me It's Not True"

Image
After many years in David Cassidy's life appeared the next Liverpool connection.  In June 1993, Bill Kenwright (he died in October 2023), a very known English producer, asked DC to come to New York to see a musical called 'Blood Brothers'. The play, written by Willy Russell, was based in Liverpool, it was originally a school play for one of Liverpool's high school, later Willy Russell himself wrote a score, and 'Blood Brothers' as musical, premiered at the Liverpool Playhouse, in 1983. The show later was shown in London and at last on Broadway, where debuted in April 1993. But it wasn't a great success in America and the British cast had to leave anyway. So Bill Kenwright first persuaded Petula Clark to accept the role of Mrs Johnston. He wanted David to be the Narrator, but DC from the start knew which role he wanted and should play. Mickey Johnston. Bill Kenwright agreed, and the idea appeared that maybe Shaun would play the second brother. Shaun Cassidy s...

Going To Liverpool. 'Here Comes The Sun"

Image
On the 24th of July, so the day after tomorrow, several British fans will meet in Liverpool, the event is called 'A Liverpool Connection' and in David Cassidy's case there were a lot of connections. It's impossible to write about everything in one entry. Today The Beatles connection.  It's not exaggeration to say that it all started in Liverpool, because of The Beatles' music. David Cassidy was perfect age, nearly 14, when like millions  of Americans he saw The Beatles on Ed Sullivan Show, 60 years ago, on February 9, 1964. David was learning their songs playing his first ever guitar.   !0 years later, he knew them all personally and recorded his own version of one of the greatest The Beatles' hits. I wish he had recorded more, 'Cassidy Sings The Beatles' that would have been something very special. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KP72VMkRXak He knew well John and Paul, there is a pic on which we can see DC and Ringo Starr, but it wasn't David...

David And Kay in 'Voice of The Turtle'

Image
I've wanted to write about something else, but after seeing this pic on Pinterest I've changed my mind of course. The pic is not very well and there is no date, but I'm sure it was taken 45 years ago, in summer 1979, when David Cassidy and his wife, Kay Lenz performed together on stage. For the first and the last time. Maybe a song first. DC co-written it with Jay Gruska for his last RCA album, and recorded it again 3 years later, with a little help of his friends (Bill Mumy and David Jolliffe). Someway for me this song is about David and Kay https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2zs_RFSjwII Do you know that David and Kay together appeared on Good Morning America, on July 23, 1979, probably also to promote this play, 'Voice of The Turtle', and talk about working together. But this tape doesn't exist anymore. David wanted to work with Kay, in a movie or a theatre, but his wife wasn't so sure about it. In June 1977, just 2 months after their wedding, she said in an...

David Cassidy in 'Jesus Christ Superstar'. 1984

Image
Jesus Christ Superstar is a rock opera, with music by Andrew Lloyd Weber and lyrics by Tim Rice. It was first released as a concept album (with Ian Gillan as Jesus), in 1970. The success of this album let to Broadway's debute in 1971, and a year later to much more successful London's production, at the Palace Theatre, the show was running there for 8 years. The story of making a film version of Jesus Christ Superstar is really amazing and very complicated. The film rights was owned by MCA Records, and a lot of directors were considered for the job. Norman Jewison was a great fan of the album, and he publicly expressed interest in directing the film adaptation at the premiere of his hit musical 'Fiddler On the Roof', in 1971. After many talks and meetings Universal Pictures agreed on Norman Jewison, who also co-produced Jesus Christ Superstar, with Robert Stigwood. Jesus Christ Superstar from the beginning was controversial, mainly for religious reasons, the role was e...

Let The Sunshine In / Galt MacDermot, James Rado and Gerome Ragni

Image
Someone has recently read my last year's entry about the 70s, the decade and its music, and David Cassidy's appearance on Jim Brickman's concert, called 'Celebration of the 70s'. The concert was at the Oakdale Theatre in Wallingford, CT, on March 2, 2013.  Of course I've read this entry myself too. First of all to check for mistakes, but it was fun to watch those videos again. Jim Brickman is an American songwriter, pianist and radio host, he was born in 1961, and in 1972 his mother took him to see David Cassidy in concert.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ncI Wow that standing ovation..And later they performed 'Cherish'. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vvGP8q_YFqs&list But for me the most moving fragment was at the end of the concert, when all stars who took part in it, were singing together. 'Let the Sunshine In', wrote in 1967 ('Hair), and 'Joy To the World', a huge hit in 1971 by Three Dog Night. Btw a DC connection here. In 1...

David Cassidy in Scandinavia

Image
I've wanted to write about DC in Scandinavia for quite a lot of time. One of the reasons is that sometimes I have readers from Sweden, Denmark and Norway, also Finland, the last country is sometimes called Scandinavian too, due to the economic and cultural similarities. The other reason is that we know not much about DC's popularity there, or even his concerts in Sweden and Denmark in 1974.   Of course we know DC's iconic pics from his Gr ö na Lund's concert, in Stockholm. Gr öna  Lund is the oldest amusment park in Sweden, there is also a concert venue there, and a lot of famous musicians performed on that stage.  Among them Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley, ABBA of course, and David Cassidy on May 8, 1974.  There is a small note about this concert on The David Cassidy Website, "Teen-age singing idol David Cassidy, 24, came to Stockholm for a concert Wednesday and by the time he had left, four girls were hospitalized and another 40 fainted or were suffering from hyster...

'All Spelling By Me..'

Image
'Cassidy Live!', the last David's album for Bell Records. Released in Germany, Japan, Spain, the US, Yugoslavia, France, Austria, Brasil and Australia. The single 'Please, Please Me / CC Rider/ Jenny Jenny' hit no 16 on July 27, 1974, 6 weeks on charts. And I've written it once, but I repeat again. My younger daughter after listening to it said, "You know mum I've heard this song so many times by The Beatles, but only listening to your David's (hahaha) version I know what this song is about." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KP72VMkRXak Really outstanding cover, it makes me feel sorry I'm not 20 again.. 'Cassidy Live!', produced by David himself and Barry Ainsworth, hit no 9 in the UK on August 3, 1974, 7 weeks on the chart. And last year I bought this album (with a poster) for 5 quids at fabulous Kellys Records in Cardiff. It's an independent record store founded in 1969, I bought only two albums, another one was 'Crossword ...

Photo Of David and Nicolette, and Who (and When) Had a Crush on DC

Image
I know it's a little bit too early for celebrating the 40th anniversary of David Cassidy's performance in Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber rock opera, 'Jesus Christ Superstar', in August 1984.  But probably at this time, 40 years ago, DC was already prepearing for it, and besides, I've seen the pic with DC and Nicolette Larson on Pinterest today, and for me it was a great relief and a kind of a sign. But let's start with a song. 'Junked Heart Blues', from 1979, it's less dramatic, more distant version of the original from 'Gettin' It In The Street' album. I like it, it has a special feeling. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jexk9glmnv8 It's been a relief to see that pic because I've had a short crisis regarding my blog, somehow every topic seemed not worth writing about, and after seeing the photo of David, Nicolette and the Mayor of Kansas City, my enthusiasm has returned. That crisis started very innocently when someone posted on...

All Kinds Of Everything / Derry Lindsay and Jackie Smith

Image
Before the England match on Saturday, my FB friend Pauline Tombs posted old David Cassidy's pic on which he was wearing a Queens Park Rangers kit, to show that also David supported Three Lions. Another FB friend, Kathryn Spencer, wrote in comment, 'It never fails to amaze me how you can find a David Cassidy link in the most unlikely of places' and Pauline (she has a great sense of humour) answered that she surprised herself sometimes. I smiled and thought that it was just the same with me as with Pauline. And at once 'All Kinds Of Everything' started playing in my head. It was a great hit, by Dana, who in 1970, still a schoolgirl at the time, won the 1970 European Song Contest with this song. Of course The European Song Contest in the 70s and 80s was not shown in the communist Poland, but winning songs were played on Polish radio. Never was a fan of them, but I got to know Dana's hit very well.  We had a young teacher of English at high school, not much older th...

Together We're Better /Tony Romeo, Ken Jacobson

Image
"Together baby we're better    On our own we're fine but united we're dynamite" From 'Notebook' album, released in 1972, a song about a boy and a girl, but I've thought about it today in connection with us, David Cassidy's fans. Because we are really better together, especially now. Of course there are still millions of people all around the world who remember DC, his glory days, his music, but I think about those fans who belong to DC groups on social media, and still want to write and read about David Cassidy and his legacy.  I wouldn't be able to write my blog for so long without the help of other fans. The list of fans who have helped me writing my blog is very long and worth a separate, special entry. No one has ever refused to help me or information, and even a dozen or so people have written for my blog. Every day I feel the support of fans and friendly interest. Thank you. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ieKGyHir3U I love this song, t...

'On This Day' And Every Other Day

Image
I'm writing today about 'On This Day' page we have on the homepage of The David Cassidy Official Website, not because I have my share in completed it, but it's really something special.  Let's first listen to David Cassidy singing 'New York City Life'. Amazing, fabulous song which shows DC's knowledge of his roots, the Great American Songbook, his talent as a composer and first of all as a very talented lyricist.  The lyrics to this song are not long, but he managed to express everything in it. The fact that he never was really at home in California, and he never liked LA's smoggy air and eartquakes, his glory past there and active love life (haha) and that New York was the place to be, to live and to achieve a success. His hometown, his  New York City life. I wish we had a really good video with this song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z-4Zt6XnrY8 Most fans don't check the hompage of The David Cassidy Official Website often if ever, we, fans pu...

David Cassidy in Europe. 1975

Image
David Cassidy's first RCA album, 'The Higher They Climb, The Harder They Fall', was released by RCA in July 1975.  In the US, the UK, Spain, India, Germany, Turkey, Australia, Italy, Greece, Japan and Canada.  Maybe a song first. Most tracks on this album are great covers, or songs rewritten by David. The only original written by DC is 'When I'm A Rock'n'Roll Star'. The other one is 'Fix Of Your Love', co-written with a friend, Dave Ellingson. What a wonderful, exciting, funky, rock number. Just listen to it with your headphones on, let the music and David's voice take you higher. (if I can put it this way). I love this song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftYFS2cQ-Fw Someone has written in comment, 'A shame American radio didn't play this'. And I'll add, 'A shame any radio, and even own DC's fans prefer admiring his pics than listen to his music. Only 1,3k views in 12 years. The single from this album, 'I Write T...

All American Boy..

Image
First I want to wish all my American friends very happy Independence Day. For most of my life I didn't even dream about going to the US myself or that one day I would have my own, special American friends. All those wonderful things have happened because of David Cassidy. I'm so grateful and I feel I own him so much. Big words but that's what I feel. So let's start with David Cassidy singing God Bless America on October 21, 2003. It took place during the 7th inning stretch of Game 3 of the 2003  World Series in Miami.  For DC, as a patriot and a sports fan it was an emotional experience. And not an easy one, to sing a capella a song everybody knows, and in the middle of a huge stadium. 30 years earlier he sung in such places, but in the 70s he was young, he had great musicians behind him and girls were screaming. This time it was just him and his voice. I love how at first some people are obviously confused, maybe didn't hear about him or if, were wondering what a f...

David Cassidy In Conversation With His Fans

Image
One more DC's radio interview from Australia 1974 has appeared on the website. David Cassidy was in the studio of Radio 3XY in Melbourne, 2 days before his concert. 'Cherish', 'If I Didn't Care' and 'Breaking Up is Hard To Do' were played, and there were also 6 fans in the studio, girls, who could ask DC questions. https://www.davidcassidy.com/fansite/TvFilmPages/Radio1974March08_3XY.mp3 It's amazing how seriously he approached to these questions. Of course DC was aware that seeing him in flesh, an opportunity to ask about something and get an answer was a dream come true for his fans. From 1970 onwards he was constantly answering some questions, usually the same ones. Fans started sending letters and asking about DC after he guest starred on Marcus Welby. In April 1970, in Tiger Beat fans got first answers from David about what he liked or disliked. In one interview he also said where he lived and where did he shop. That was a huge mistake..I wrote ...

David's Radio Interview And Some July Anniversaries

Image
Suddenly and quite unexpectedly July 2024 has begun. Better not to think about the passing time, but somehow it's not easy to forget about it while writing about DC.  A new radio interview on the website, another one from 1974, and I'm so happy, each DC's radio interview from the 70s is priceless. This one was broadcast in Australia, in February, and David was on the phone, advertising his upcoming concert in Melbourne and talking about his solo albums. https://www.davidcassidy.com/fansite/TvFilmPages/Radio1970s.html Just amazing. Maybe because I never heard DC on the radio in the 70s, now those conversations make a huge impression on me.  DC on the radio was a complete different person that the one known from The Partridge Family ('TV show' as he usually called it), especially in this conversation. I have no idea if it was pre-recorded, or DC was live on it and it was a time difference, anyway his voice was tired, but his answers so thoughtful and honest. Mature.  ...
